September 28 A7X in concertIt has come to my attention that Avenged Sevenfold will be playing in Casper on November 4th. That is just two days after The Boy's 15th birthday. I bet you can't guess what I am getting him. This concert has sort of redeemed this forsaken place in my eyes. I still wish I hadn't come back to Wyoming or this little burb called Riverton, but what choice did I have. It was this or live on the streets.
I have finally reconnected with one of my friends here. I think of all the people I left behind, she was one I missed the most. I love this girl. She's been one of my best friends for the last eight or so years. She's vivacious and fun, but at the same time down-to-earth. Her and I share a passion for photography which we don't get to indulge in as often as we would like. We both have lives that take up a huge chunk of our time and photography just hasn't found it's place in those lives.
I got side tracked. Sorry, back to the music. You should check them out. My favorite song is "A Little Piece of Heaven." The boy and I call it "Psycho Circus" because the music sounds like something you would hear at some dark and scary back alley circus. I also like "Beast and the Harlot" from their last album. These are just a couple. If you like good hard rock, give them a listen. You'll be glad you did!!! November 30 I Love MusicI was sitting at home last night taking a much needed break from finals (yup! It's that time again) and burning some songs for my car. I'm sure I spent over an hour trying to figure out what songs I wanted to put on the disc. Here's my dilemma. I Love music! I can't say all kinds of music, but most music and I am always open to new stuff. So, my computer is loaded with oldies, goodies, rock, metal, country, classical, new age, funk, punk, alternative...the list goes on. I kept asking myself what I would most want to listen to while I was driving to and from work.
I never really answered that question and finally ended up picking songs at random. The funny thing is they are all songs that I like to sing as loud as I can. Now, before you go running for the hills with your hands over your ears I have to tell you... I can sing. Unfortunately, that is the only thing I do well musically. I can't write music or lyrics. The last instrument I played was tenor sax in junior high.
At the risk of sounding pompous and arrogant, I am musically talented, and my only problem with these songs is that I don't know all the words. May 01 Elementary and Secondary Music ProgramsWhen I was in school, I started in band and chior when I reached the fourth grade. Our schools held concerts 3 or 4 times a year. I don't know how other states do it, or even other towns within Wyoming, but now (at least here), they don't start the kids until 6th grade. I also remember that when I was in school, if a kid wanted to play the drums all he had to do was buy sticks. Now, they want the drummers to have at least two years of piano. I don't know what the relationship is between drums and piano, but I'm told it has something to do with rythm. In my opinion, a person can have rythm without knowing how to play the piano. For some people, it just comes naturally. When I played, I was the first seat flutist. I was by no means perfect, but I earned my seat by busting my ass and practicing for hours every day. My parents never had to encourage me, it was something I wanted to do. I also played piccolo and baritone sax. I haven't played in years, something I now regret. My mom thinks it would be cool if I picked up an instrument again. She also thinks that if my son saw how much I practiced he would be motivated to practice as well. Tonight my son performed with the sixth grade band. This was the last concert of the year and they played songs they will be performing at "District Festival" on Friday. I must say that everyone has improved immensely since the Yuletime concert. There were still some moments that made me cringe. My mom tells me that I now know why she and my grandmother had tears in their eyes after my concerts. It wasn't because we were so good our music moved them to tears. It was because they couldn't stop laughing. Tonight, I think she got a bigger kick out of my reactions. Anyway, back to what I was saying. Our school music programs are in serious trouble. As the cost of everything goes up and more and more funding is needed for this and that and the other thing, music programs are usually the first thing districts cut. Even at the college level. Our community college was founded on its liberal arts programs. Programs like music, fine art, english, etc. etc. Now, it is thinking of eliminating the music program so it can put more money into its nursing and agricultural programs. This is very distressing to me, because while I am an English major, music is a part of my soul. Study after study has shown that when children are involved in music, they have a better self esteem, their grades are higher and they stay in school longer. This is all good. What parent wouldn't want these things for their children? Where is the downside to maintaining funding for a schools music program? So, the poor football players will have to do a bit of fundraising to get new equipment. What do you think the countries music lovers are doing to keep music in the schools? Why, I ask you, do schools put so much emphasis on sports anyway? Why not put an equal (or hell, even greater) emphasis on music? Music will stay with these kids for the rest of their lives. Sports, unless they are talented enough to make it to the pros, will be with them for only a few years. April 28 Hey!!! Check This Out!!!Okay, I won't go into a bunch of blah-blah-blah about how I came across this. What you will see if you click on the link is the newest video from the band HIM. It isn't set to actually hit the airwaves until Monday when MTV2 will debut it, but rock-sound.net broke it today. As far as I know, they are the first ones. Fan sites for the band are picking up on it real quick though, so it won't be long before it spreads like a virus throughout the internet.
So, check it out and (I'm begging you!!!!) let me know what you think.
By the way, any of you who are familiar with the show "Miami Ink" will recognize the tatoo artist as Kat Von D. And another bit of information...All of the fans in the audience are members of the HIM street team (although I'm wondering if the face suckers weren't actors) The wall with all of the writing on it that Ville is standing in front of in part of the video is composed of e-mail messages from the fans. How's that for getting up close and personal with your favorite band? Ahhhhhhh, only in my most vivid, erotic dreams. *big, cheesy grin* April 17 Talking about MSN - Music Videos: HomeIf you are at all curious about this band I talk so much about, MSN music has some pretty good stuff to "educate" you about them. Visit the link below. Then, click on videos by artist. Then click on H. The first 11 videos under H are by HIM. They change the order everyday. Hmm...I wonder why that is. Anyway, of all of them, there is only one I'm not real thrilled with. That is "When Love and Death Embrace." I don't know, I just can't get into the song for some reason. There are other videos floating around out there. I manage to come across one I haven't seen at least once a week. Keep in mind, this band was incredibly popular before they hit the states. Europe loves HIM. Americans seem to be a little slow on the draw when it comes to things like music. But hey, I'm doing my best to spread the word. Who know maybe this will lead me to a new career. Just call me "Big Mouth" the voice for new music!!! But seriously, I would highly recommend some further investigation into HIM. No, their music doesn't appeal to everyone, as evidenced by an aquaintence of mine (He's not impressed), but with an open mind, I think they will catch your attention. The song playing on my space right now doesn't have a video to my knowledge, but it caught my attention when I heard it for the first time a couple of days age (see, even I am still learning about them). I literally stopped in my tracks. I absolutely love the deep, throaty (I don't know if this is the right word) vocals in the chorus. Being very imaginative, I can picture Ville Valo singing this song and...Well, let's just say I'm a sucker for a guy with bass in his voice.
MSN - Music Videos: Home April 14 I Love When a Plan Comes TogetherThe hotel room is reserved. The babysitter is arranged. I'm ordering the tickets in the morning. I am actually going to go to the concert!!!! You'll have to read my last entry to know what I am talking about. I'm so excited!!!! My stomach has butterflies already and the concert is a little over a month away.
My son is not liking the fact that I am going without him, but I feel like I deserve to have one night where I don't have to be a mom and can enjoy myself. I know he'll be safe, so I don't have to worry about him. Don't I deserve to have one or two nights of worry free fun without him? Wouldn't a couple nights of mom free fun somehow make me a better mom?
I'm over feeling guilty about this. This is something I deserve to give myself. My son will get over it and he will live through the disappointment. This is going to be my time and I plan on enjoying it like I will never live again. Hell, yeah!!! I love it when a plan comes together!!!! March 18 HaHa...I Finally Fingered It Out!!!You are listening to my latest obsession. The fact that you can hear it means that I have finally figured out the damn media player thing.
Anyway, the name of the band is H.I.M. and they hail from Helsinki, Finland. They play a sort of gothic metal style of music. The lyrics are dark and brooding and the music is captivating (at least to me it is). Not to mention the fact that I am maddly in lust with the lead singer. That would be the guy on the top right of the picture.
December 17 Holiday SongsI went to my son's Christmas band concert at school last Tuesday. And for the most part, it was quite enjoyable. Now, I know why my mother and grandmother had tears in their eyes when they met me after some of the concerts I performed in as a kid. It wasn't because they were filled with joy or the songs we played moved them to tears. It was because they couldn't stop laughing everytime we hit a sour note.
I have a few songs that I really enjoy during this time of year. One is the song "Do You Hear What I Hear?" Written by Noel Regney and Gloria Shayne in 1962, it was recorded for the first time on November 25th, 1963 by Bing Crosby. The song embraced all the traditions and feelings of Christmas, and soon became a yuletide classic. Mr. Regney wrote the song as a clear and plantive plea for peace at the time of the Cuban Missle Crisis, in October 1962. "Do You Hear What I Hear?" had its origin when Mr. Regney was asked to write the flip side of a single that was expected to become a hit, according to an interview he gave the The Ridgefield Press in Connecticut. He wrote the lyrics, based on his vision of a newborn lamb. He handed it to his wife and asked her to write the tune. She was shoping at Bloomingdale's when she thought of the first music line. The finished version of the song moved the two creators so mych that at first they could not sing it. Regent Publishing Company bought the song after the flip-side deal fell through. The Harry Simeon Chorale recorded it and it sold more than 250,000 copies in a week. Bing Crosby's version in 1963 sold more than one million.
Another is "Carol Of The Bells."Although it has become a popular tune during the holidays, the original lyrics had nothing to do with Christmas. Written in 1916 by Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovich and titled "Shchedryk," and first performed by students at Kiev University in December 1916, the song tells the tale of a swallow flying into a household to proclaim the plentiful year that the family will have. When American choir director and arranger Peter Wilhousky heard Leontovich's choral work, it reminded him of bells; so he wrote new lyrics to convey that imagery for his choir. He copyrighted the new lyrics in 1963 and also published the song, despite the fact that the work was published almost two decades earlier in Soviet Ukraine. Now called "Carol of the Bells" the song has become associated with Christmas because of its new lyrics, which include references to silver bells, caroling and the line "merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas." |
